So what does this have to do with AI? Well when I remember myself at nine years old typing in listings from Input, it occurs to me that programming is a very human thing, an expression of our humanity. It was high end, glossy magazine stuff and the effort that must have gone into this 52 part series is astonishing. 'Input' is an incredible work of art and education and should be celebrated as such! The magazine was also laden with an astonishing collection of illustraions, photos and drawings in a wide variety of styles which just made programming look so cool. The least transferable content in Input is the assembly language listings which, of course, are highly specific to each computer and nothing but a curiosity these days considering all the machines catered for are obsolete and no one programs in assembly these days anyway. I remember learning bubblesort from Input for example (I know, it's not efficient but it suffices for small lists and is a good place to start and I was only nine!). All these computers are, of course, obsolete now, but the BASIC programs listed bear some resemblance to modern programming languages and the algorithms described are still in use. The magazine was aimed at owners of various home computers common at the time including Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Dragon 32, BBC Micro and Acorn Electron. Although laborious, this is actually a good way to learn, since you obtain the 'muscle memory' of different commands and where to find them on the keyboard (entering BASIC command in those days often involved weird key combinations). There was no internet in those days and even floppy disks were not common so example programs were simply listed in each issue and the user had to type them in. (I don't know if 'partworks' like this even exist any more). You could even buy ring binders to put all the issues together into a reference manual. Every week, readers could buy a new magazine and the whole lot combined into a single programming course.
